Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder, in which the body is unable to make adequate use of glucose, resulting in a condition of hyperglycemia. Excessive glucose in the blood leads to high levels of glucose in the urine (glucosuria). This increases the production of urine, which leads to dehydration and increased thirst.
Glucose comes from the food we eat and is also generated in the liver and muscles. So, the blood carries glucose to all the cells of our body. So, Insulin, a chemical produced in the pancreas, is responsible for the uptake of glucose into cells for energy. Then, the decrease in insulin levels affects this mechanism, which leads to an increase in glucose in the bloodstream.
In Ayurveda, diabetes mellitus is known as Madhumeha (Madhu means “honey” and Meha means “urine”). So, Madhumeha is categorized as Vataj Meha. Vata is humour in Ayurveda, which symbolizes wind and dryness.
The deterioration of the body is a characteristic that indicates a deterioration of Vata. Then, the other major cause of diabetes mellitus is that it alters digestion. So, the deterioration of digestion leads to the accumulation of specific digestive impurities that accumulate in the pancreatic cells and impair the production of insulin.
Ayurvedic treatment for this disease is based on a complete change in the person’s lifestyle. Along with medicines and diet, it is also recommended that the patient lead a healthy life and have an active life. So, changes in diet and lifestyle rejuvenate cells and tissues of the body, allowing the body to produce insulin properly. Even mental aspects are considered in Ayurvedic medicine.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Ayurveda can help control diabetes in a natural way. Treatment is always based on the constitution of the individual (Prakriti), ie the predominant dosha. Although other factors such as heredity (genetics), eating habits, socio-cultural influence and lifestyle, are also taken into account when designing a treatment. Some of the symptoms of diabetes are:
- Sweet urine like honey.
- Polyphagia or excessive hunger.
- Polydipsia or excessive thirst.
- Loss of limbs.
- The sensation of burning in the skin.
- Epileptic or mobile foot.
Ayurvedic Remedies for Diabetes
Azadirachta indica (Neem)
For diabetics and those suffering from sugar problems, neem is a good friend. Neem leaf extracts significantly lower blood sugar levels and prevents glucose-induced hyperglycemia as well as adrenaline. So, the plant increases the use of glucose, in addition, increases the consumption of glucose and the deposition of glycogen.
You can use it as a high-quality supplement, it is very low cost and highly effective. Also, you can make tea with the leaves or use the oil topically, as the skin absorbs it. However, it is recommended to consume the leaves at the same time orally to receive a suitable dose.
Cinnamomum cassia (cinnamon)
For diabetics, their benefit is more on sugar levels, which are actually reduced by the consumption of cinnamon (1-6 grams of cinnamon a day), as additional benefits this reduces the levels of triglycerides, bad cholesterol and total cholesterol.
These benefits are gained through an increase in insulin sensitivity and its role as a potent antioxidant, which comes with many other health benefits.
Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek)
The defatted fenugreek seeds contain the alkaloids gonelline, nicotinic acid and coumarin. The fibre contained in the seed may be part of the mechanism by which this herb provides its benefits. So, studies on this information do not explain the mechanism of action, but the results are concrete, fenugreek seeds reduce blood sugar levels.
