  5. Nasya Treatment In Ayurveda:...

The nose is the door to the brain and knowledge. In Ayurveda, the supply of medicines through the nasal route is called Nasya. The excessive accumulation of bodily humour at the sinuses, throat, or head level should be removed through the nearest canal: the nose. Prana, the vital energy, enters the body through nervous energy through the breath and, therefore, through the nose. Let’s find out about nasya treatment in Ayurveda through this article.

Prana resides in the cerebellum and maintains active motor and sensory functions, governing mental activity, memory, concentration, and intellectual vivacity. An alteration of prana causes a malfunction of all this activity and is the cause of migraine, seizures, loss of memory, and reduced sensory perception.

The nasal administration, Nasya, is indicated in the case of alterations of prana, congestion of the sinuses, migraines, convulsions, and, in some cases, also for visual or auditory disorders.

Also, you can improve breathing by massaging the nasal cavity with the little finger after administering the ghee. It would help if you massaged the inner walls of the nose slowly, pressing as deep as possible, so it is advisable to have the nails well cut to avoid damaging the nasal mucosa.

What Is Nasya Therapy?

Nasya is a procedure immediately after nasal irrigation; this consists of applying oil to the nasal membranes to lubricate and return the balance to the membranes after cleaning. The type of oil to use depends on each person’s medical needs; however, at the general level, you can use an organic session oil or cold-pressed. You can apply the drops of oil with a dropper or with the help of a little finger.

Types Of Nasya

There are six main types of Nasya:

1. Pradhana Nasya

It uses dry powders (rather than oils) blown into the nose with a tube. Pradhamana Nasya is used primarily for Kapha types of diseases involving headaches, heaviness in the head, nasal congestion, sticky eyes, hoarseness of voice due to sticky Kapha, sinusitis, cervical lymphadenitis, tumours, worms, some skin diseases, epilepsy, drowsiness, parkinsonism, inflammation of the nasal mucosa, attachment, greed, and lust. Traditionally, powders such as Brahmi are used.

2. Brumhana Nasya

It uses ghee, oils, salt, Shatavari ghee, ashwagandha ghee, and medicated milk for Vata disorders. It is said to benefit conditions resulting from Vata imbalances such as Vata-type headaches, migraine headaches, dryness of voice, dry nose, nervousness, anxiety, fear, dizziness, emptiness, negativity, heaviness of eyelids, bursitis, stiffness in the neck, dry sinuses and loss of sense of smell.

3. Shaman Nasya (Sedative Nasya)

It is used according to which dosha is aggravated but mainly for pitta-type disorders such as hair thinning, conjunctivitis, and ear ringing. Generally, certain herbal medicated decoctions, teas, and medicated oils are used.

4. Navana Nasya (Decoction Nasya)

It is used in Vata-Pitta or Kapha-pitta disorders and is made from decoctions and oils together.

5. Marhya Nasya (Ghee Or Oil Nasya)

Alleviates Pitta-Vata and expels the toxin from the head and neck.

6. Prati Marhya (Daily Oil Nasya)

It is performed by dipping the clean little finger in the ghee or oil and inserting it into each nostril, lubricating the nasal passage with gentle massage. It helps to open deep tissues. Also, it can be done every day and at any time to release stress.

How To Perform Nasya For Self-Administration

Here are a few steps:

Step 1: Warm The Oil

You should never apply cold oil to your body. To warm the oil just right, place the Nasya bottle into a large container of mildly hot (not boiling!) water until you have reached the desired temperature. It should be about body temperature or slightly cooler to avoid harming the mucus membrane.

Step 2: Lay In A Comfortable Area That Allows The Head To Tilt Back

Once the oil is ready for application, lie on a bed or couch, allowing the head to come off the end a bit, tilting it back comfortably. You will be here for several minutes, so please ensure you have support in your neck. Also, ensure the Nasya oil is nearby, as the application is the next step.

Step 3: Apply The Nasya To Each nostril

Take the warm Nasya oil and open the bottle. Squeeze the dropper “nipple,” allowing the glass dropper to fill with oil. Carefully bring this over to the right nostril. Slowly and gently squeeze the nipple allowing the desired drop to go into the right nostril.

Then apply the same amount to the left nostril. One should add 1-5 drops into each nostril, depending on their specific needs. If this is your first time using Nasya, only apply 1-2 drops. Then, increase as appropriate over time.

Step 4: Take A Large Inhale

After you apply the drops:

  1. Put the dropper back into the bottle and close it tightly.
  2. Place the bottle to the side in a safe place.
  3. Take your hand and cover the left nostril, inhaling deeply through the right.
  4. Cover the right nostril, taking a deep inhale through the left.

Step 5: Sit Back And Allow Penetration

Now it is time to lay back. Keep the head tilted, close the eyes, and allow the Nasya to work magic. Stay here for 1-3 minutes before slowly getting up. Feel free to blow your nose if needed.
